A community photo project promoting visibility and empowerment.
What is Trans Portraits UK?
Trans Portraits UK is a visibility and education project featuring the trans community throughout the UK. I founded the project in July 2020, initially as Bristol Trans Portraits, in response to increasing transphobia in the media. One of the major aims of TPUK is to give trans people the opportunity to create media about ourselves. For that reason, the project hosts free photoshoots for trans/nonbinary people, who are then also given a platform to talk about their experiences.
The project also aims to reach out and start a conversation with those who have perhaps never met a transgender person before, while providing an empowering experience for all who take part. I do regular social media posts, which aim to inform and shed light on our experiences, and in November 2022 released a magazine - the second issue of which will be coming in 2025!
Participation is open to anyone in the UK who is trans or non-binary. Priority is given to given to groups that are usually underrepresented trans media and in arts projects, including Black folks, Asian folks and any People of Colour, those who are disabled, and anyone over the age of 40. 50% of all spaces are reserved for People of Colour.
